Introduction

Motivation App is a popular mobile app with over 10 million users. It helps users stay motivated and reach their goals by providing them with daily inspirational quotes.

Contribution

I led the strategy and design of new features for the Motivation App redesign. These features included new articles, podcasting and community features. The goal of the redesign was to make the app more immersive and interactive, and to help users stay motivated and engaged.

Problem

Motivation apps are becoming increasingly popular, but they can be difficult to stay engaged with as they work by sending notifications of the quotes to users phones. This removes the need for the user to go into the app to interact and they may not be motivated to use the app on a regular basis. We need to increase engagement of the app itself through increasing different interactions the user takes on the app.

Key Drivers

With content engagement increasing via audio and visual content its important for motivation apps to diversify their content to maintain high levels of user engagement. This is why I focussed on these key areas for the redesign:

Blog Articles:

This feature will offer personalised recommendations for motivational blog articles. This will help users to find the articles that are most relevant to them and the recommendations will be based on the user's interests and history.

Podcasts:

This feature will suggest personalised podcasts from popular and influential people around the topic of motivation. Users will also be able to search by podcaster or topic.

Simple Interface

The app should also provide a community forum where users can share quotes, articles, and podcast episodes that they find inspiring. This will help users to stay motivated and to connect with others who are on the same journey.

What does the current motivational quote app landscape look like?

I wanted to get a clear picture of how users currently use motivation apps and what features they find most helpful. In order to get a better understanding of their behaviours and motivations, here are some of the qualitative and quantitative research techniques I used for the redesign:

User interviews:

I interviewed 10 users who regularly use motivation apps. The interviews focused on understanding their motivations for using motivation apps, the features that they find most helpful, and the challenges that they face.

Surveys:

I conducted a survey of 50 users who have used motivation apps in the past. The survey asked about their overall satisfaction with motivation apps, the features that they would like to see added, and their thoughts on the future of motivation apps.

Analysis of user reviews:

I analysed user reviews of motivation apps on the App Store and Google Play. This helped me to identify the pain points that users are experiencing and the features that they are requesting.

Research Findings

“Respondents showed that they are looking for more engaging and immersive experiences, and that they are not satisfied with simply reading text quotes.”

The rise of mobile devices and social media has led to a shift in how people consume content. Today's users are more likely to turn to their phones or tablets for content that is both engaging and convenient. As a result of these factors, motivation apps need to create a variety of content formats, including video, audio, and text. They also need to make sure that their apps are personalised to the individual user, so that users can easily find the content that they are looking for.

Survey Questions:

How important is it too you to be able to see visual and audio content in your motivation app?

What types of visual and audio content would you like to see in your quote app?

User Journey Mapping

Based upon data from in-person interviews, surveys, and user reviews, I organized my observations and categorized them using a customer journey map. This helped me expose pain points and areas for improvement in the app along the entire user journey. It also helped spark discussions to help close knowledge gaps and acted as a catalyst for idea sharing and generation.

Brainstorm

Balancing user needs with
business goals

The initial user research uncovered various areas of opportunity but for the MVP,
I kept in mind the business goals and organisational capacity and decided to focus upon some key areas, including personalised recommendations for articles and podcasts as well as a community section. The redesign was an attempt to address the users lack of interaction and engagement within the app.

User Flow Diagram

I refined the concept with business needs and research outcomes, going through a few rounds of iteration and sketching. I also came up with a simplified information architecture and user flow for the quote homepage, the podcast selection, the personalised article section and the community element.

Wireframes - Ideation to Action

I worked to brainstorm and sketch numerous ideas for the new app. We created low-fidelity wireframes and prototypes to test different possibilities. The result was three distinct views: podcasts, blog articles and a community experience (sharing, messaging).

Iconography & Components

I started by building a comprehensive components library within Sketch that would later reflect in various parts of the app, i.e., colors, typography, setting the grid etc. This included icons, buttons, form elements, error and empty states, show cards and content cards.

Motivation Apps design system was built to be scalable, so that its components can work together seamlessly and render well on devices of all resolutions.

Colour Scheme

Podcasts

As we saw from the user research, audio engagement was the most popular avenue of user engagement so I wanted to create a feature that is similar to their content libraries, but with a focus on motivational podcasts. I designed the podcast feature in the motivation app to allow users to browse podcasts by category, popularity, and new releases. Users will also be able to create their own playlists of podcasts and subscribe to their favourite podcasts. I took inspiration from Spotify and Apple Music when designing the podcast feature.

Articles

The user research phase showed that users wanted more visual engagement in the form of blog articles, so I wanted to create a feature that is similar to the podcast content library, but with a focus on motivational articles. I designed the articles section to allow users to browse articles by category, popularity, and new releases. Users will also be able to create their own reading lists of articles and subscribe to their favourite authors. I took inspiration from the podcast content library view when designing the articles section.

Community

I designed the community feature to be easy to use and navigate, so users can quickly and easily find and connect with other users. It offers a variety of features that allow users to interact with each other, such as the ability to like and message other users. The community feature of the motivation app is a key part of the redesign because it allows users to connect with other users who share their interests and goals.

Lessons Learned

Communication & collaboration:

I worked closely with a team of engineers to bring the redesign to life. It was important to communicate effectively and collaborate closely to ensure that everyone was on the same page and that we were working towards a common goal.

Flexibility and adaptability:

The design process is iterative, and it's important to be flexible and adaptable to change. I was willing to experiment with different ideas and to make changes based on feedback from users and stakeholders. It is important to test, reiterate and repeat.

Attention to detail:

It's important to pay attention to the details when designing a product. This includes things like the typography, color scheme, and overall user experience. I took the time to carefully consider every aspect of the design to ensure that it was as polished and user-friendly as possible.
